In this short piece we explore the contrast between playing short, light sounds in the first and last sections with a more lyrical melody in the middle. The rhythmic layers in the first section encourage subdivision and listening between the upper and lower strings.

The 'tap' instruction is on the shoulder of the instrument with the left hand.

When I was writing this piece, I was imagining Saturn as a huge disco mirror ball in the sky. It is about having fun through playing music together. It has communication between the upper and lower strings and fun soli moments for the cellos and basses. It is great to move and smile while playing this piece!

The inspiration for this piece is the raging storm on Jupiter. The anti-cyclonic storm is larger than the earth. The 'animato' minor sections of this piece represent the ferocious outer edges of the ring, with the 'calmo' major section representing the calmer centre of the storm.

For open string Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass with advanced string ensemble accompaniment

In this piece we imagine an enchanted carousel that changes direction of its own accord. This is represented by the repeated down bow and then up bow patterns.

The carousel changes direction several times before accelarating to the end. The advanced accompaniment mimcs a traditional fairground organ.

The intention behind this piece is to encourage freedom of action in the bowing arm. It is effective to teach the open string parts aurally, away from the notated music.
