Hannah Borlase Viola

Hannah is currently in her fourth year studying viola under Lucy Nolan at the Royal Northern College of Music, having graduated from the University of Manchester doing what is known as the ‘joint course’. She looks forward to staying at RNCM to complete a Masters of Music course. Hannah loves sharing music with others and was honoured to perform the Walton Viola Concerto with both the City of Carlisle Orchestra and the Halifax Symphony Orchestra. She is part of the Ayla quartet and has enjoyed playing a range of music with them: Beethoven, Shostakovich, folk, and contemporary pieces working alongside composers. They are currently playing as a quintet with a pianist working on Dvorak’s Op 81! Other highlights have included playing Mahler 10 under Anthony Hermus, taking part in a Huw Watkins concert and workshop with the composer, and playing alongside players from Manchester Camerata and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

Hannah was awarded the Hargreaves Prize for Dissertation and the Hargreaves Prize for Academic Excellence from the University of Manchester, writing her dissertation on the links between music and mission in a multicultural congregation. She also is passionate about outreach and education, currently teaching violin/viola at Semitone Studios and starting teaching with Trafford Music Service soon. Hannah was honoured to be chosen to be part of the Creative Musician’s Residency organised by Jessie’s Fund, who use music with children with SEND. She also enjoyed putting on ceilidh workshops in a local primary school this year!
