Georgina MacDonell Finlayson Violin

Georgina MacDonell Finlayson is a Scottish violinist, fiddle player, composer, educator and community arts practitioner, with a particular interest in collaborative, cross-genre and multidisciplinary performance.

She is a founding member of award-winning string quartet Vulva Voce, specialising in music written by women and underrepresented voices, and currently plays with Sinfonia Cymru. With a particular interest in contemporary music, folk inspired repertoire and cross-genre performance, she has played with diverse ensembles across the UK, including Edinburgh Contemporary Music Ensemble, Kellie Consort, Manchester Concert Orchestra and Nevis Ensemble, and in 2022 participated in Manchester Collective’s Winter Residency.

Her artistic practice is often inspired by folk music, nature, landscape and the climate crisis. Her works have been played by members of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Red Note Ensemble and Any Enemy, performed at Aberdeen’s sound festival and broadcast on the BBC Radio 3 New Music Show. She often works with live storytelling and theatre, appearing at the Scottish International Storytelling Festival and the Audacious Women Festival.  In 2019 she curated the original folk music and live soundscape for intimate theatre show Miss Lindsay Secret, as well as creating the music and sound design for The Not So Ugly Duckling (Jo Clifford, Made in Scotland Showcase).

Throughout her creative work, education and community projects have always been a strong driving force. She is a Lead Ambassador with the Benedetti Foundation, and is currently devising a piece with two community choirs as part of Making Music and Sound and Music’s ‘Adopt a Music Creator’ scheme.
