Georgia Steel Viola

Georgia Steel is a violist, conductor, and music educator from New Zealand. She has had a unique musical journey, starting her musician education on piano and picking up the viola at 17 after discovering a love for orchestral music. Since then, she has gained an undergraduate in viola performance and conducting from the New Zealand School of Music, performing in numerous orchestral ensembles, including with Orchestra Wellington. She was guest conductor in the Kapiti Concert Orchestra’s 2021 season and has been assistant conductor in various community music orchestras.

After her undergraduate degree, Georgia built up a full-time teaching studio in Suzuki violin and traditional piano teaching. As a late starter to string playing, Georgia brings into her teaching practice her conviction that every child (and adult!) can benefit from learning an instrument.

Georgia is a passionate advocate for equal access to music education and performance. She was the president of CanDo at Vic, the disabled students’ group at Victoria University of Wellington, and will be the Vice President in Equality and Diversity at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in the second year of her masters. In her spare time, she often accidentally walks into things and ignores people waving at her, but is strangely good at video games considering her sub-par seeing abilities.
