BEGINNER ORCHESTRA

Beginner Orchestra
Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June 2026

The Beginner Orchestra is for string players, recommended age 6-13, who are working between Grade 1-3 standard. Young people must have turned 6 by 6 June 2026.

The Beginner Orchestra will take place on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June. Participants are required to attend both days.

Watch this short video from Tutor, Joelle Broad, to find out more about what we do in the Beginner Orchestra and whether this is the right group for you.

During the Aberdeen Sessions, the Beginner Orchestra will work on two pieces; one which is just for your orchestra, and one mass piece, bringing together the Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Orchestras. The Beginner piece is going to be a brand new space themed commission written by Joëlle Broad  and the mass piece is Shostakovich’s Jazz Suite No.1

Over the weekend, we explore expression, storytelling, sound production, freedom in playing, the context of the music and improvisation, as well as delving into specific technical challenges.

A creative task is also shared in advance to encourage participants to immerse themselves in the story of the music during the preparation period. We then ask participants to bring this with them to the weekend.

Both days will end with a short sharing session to which families are invited to join (limited capacity).
