Alex Laing 
Conductor and Violin

Alex is a highly sought-after educator, presenter, adjudicator, conductor and violinist. He is one of a rare breed, who is able to inspire musicians of any age and stage, from nurturing the youngest string player to enabling the adult learner; from coaching postgraduate performers to mentoring other teachers. He is knowledgeable, caring, innovative and enthusiastic.

Alex is Director of Music at Wells Cathedral School, one of the UK's very few specialist music schools, where he leads a team of over 100 music teachers.His former posts include Artistic Director (Music) at the King's High School in Warwick (2017-2022) Head of Strings at Uppingham School (2010-2017) and professor of violin of the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music (2014-19). He is founder and artistic director of the Darwin Ensemble Chamber Orchestra (DECO).


As well as his work for the Benedetti Foundation, Alex has a long association with the National Children’s Orchestras of Great Britain. He is in his second period (2019-) as conductor of the NCO Easterlies, having previously held the role for 4 years (2012-2016). He also acts as a violin tutor and conductor on NCO courses, including as violin coach for the NCOnline course during the Covid 19 pandemic.
