Teaching Sessions: Energise, Innovate, Inspire

The Teaching Sessions: Energise, Innovate, Inspire are a new professional development opportunity beginning in 2021 for both instrumental and classroom teachers (including those training to be teachers). Taking place over three weeks, and working in a small group of 15-20 teachers, these sessions are designed to focus on building and developing a specific area of your teaching. At the end of the training sessions, you may opt to have a 20-30 minute online observed session (there is a small additional fee for this) and to receive feedback on your teaching. Teachers will be awarded a certificate to celebrate the training you have undertaken.

Teaching Beginner Brass

Tuesday 1, 8 and 15 June

7.30 - 8.30 pm UK Time

During these three sessions, teachers will work in a small group led by brass specialist Arlene Macfarlane to develop your skills for teaching beginner brass. Throughout the sessions, we will explore early development, posture and set up for beginner players, including beginner instruments, strategies for motivation, establishing practise routines, exercises and repertoire for beginner players, teaching whole class brass, relationships with parents/carers and there will be plenty of time for questions.

These sessions would be suitable for teachers with any level of experience. We would recommend you are actively teaching beginners for these sessions to be of greatest benefit to you.

Arlene has held teaching posts for all of the Ayrshire Music Services and currently works for East Ayrshire Music Service. She is also Course Director for the West of Scotland Schools Orchestra Trust, Musical Director for the Dynamica Brass Academy and Lower Brass Instructor with the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain. Arlene was formerly the Sub-Principal Trombone of BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and still continues to play professionally.
