Left and Right-Hand Reset - All Cellists & Basses

Join David Munn (cello) and Alice Kent (bass) for a 2-part reset for the right and left hand. We’ll be going back to basics and looking at the fundamentals of both left-hand playing and right-hand bowing techniques. Ideal for advanced beginners and intermediate level players, as well as more advanced players wishing to readdress and reset, and younger beginners just starting out. Cellists and Basses will work in separate groups for the majority of the sessions.

Exploring Duo Sonatas for Violin and Piano
Saturday 30 January and 6 February

Join violinist Elena Urioste and pianist Tom Poster for the first part of a new series exploring sonatas for violin and piano. We’ll be exploring the give-and-take, collaborative phrasing and beauty of sound in Brahms Sonata for Piano and Violin in G major. Then on week two discovering more about Debussy Sonata for Violin and Piano as we look at creative use of tone colour, characterisation and different approaches to French and German music. These sessions are aimed at advanced violinists and pianists and are open to older teenagers (recommended approx. age 15+), students and teachers.
Younger advanced violinists and pianists interested in attending these sessions may join with written permission from a parent/carer – please contact us before registering

Introduction to Shifting Upper Strings – Intermediate Violin and Viola

These sessions will support intermediate violin and viola players to develop shifting technique. This is suitable for those who have only just begun to learn to shift, but equally accessible for those who have been playing for a while and would like to reset and refocus their shifting technique. We would advise all participants to check with your teacher before signing up on these sessions, especially if you have not yet begun this technique.

Interpretation and Analysis – Advanced Violin (age 15+)

In these sessions we will help you to develop a greater understanding of what is happening in the music and how this shapes the way it can be interpreted. We will be focusing on two pieces of violin repertoire: Allemande from Bach’s D minor Partita and Mozart Violin Concerto in G major, movement 1. Through these two pieces of repertoire, Alex will share how simple musical analysis and understanding of context can shape ideas of interpretation and improve a performer’s ability to memorise and tell a convincing story. These sessions are suitable for young people approximately age 15+, music students, recent graduates and instrumental teachers.

Interpretation and Analysis – Advanced Cello (age 15+)

Exploring Brahms' Cello and Piano Sonatas

Join cellist Leonard Elschenbroich and pianist Alexei Grynyuk for a two part series exploring Brahms' Piano and Cello sonatas. During these sessions, we'll be delving into the relationship between piano and cello, the context and character of the repertoire, interpretation and analysis of some chosen movements, as well as hearing performances from Leonard and Alexei. These sessions are for advanced cellists and pianists and are open to older teenages (recommended approx. age 15+), students, teachers and advanced adult players.
