Advanced String Orchestra
Recommended ages: 12 - 17
Instruments: Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass
The Advanced workshop is for string players Grade 7+ (please note, exams do not have to have been taken). You will have the opportunity to make music with like-minded young musicians, to work with the highest level music educators and to prioritise skills that lie far beyond the ‘in-tune and in-time’ method of string playing. We will introduce new ways to improve your approach to physicality and musicality.
Saturday and Sunday 9am - 5.30 pm
Elgar – Introduction and Allegro
Bartok – Romanian Folk Dances No. 4, 5 and 6
A series of workshops and full string orchestra rehearsals over the two days covering technical, creative and improvisatory aspects of music making as well as collective listening and collaborative ensemble playing.
To apply for a place on the Advanced or Intermediate workshop, we ask you to submit a link to a video of your recent playing on the application form. This link is needed to complete an application.
The video can be any piece of repertoire you choose. We suggest you play something you feel comfortable with. It should be no longer than 5 minutes and can be shared via a YouTube, Vimeo or Dropbox link.
Please ensure we are able to see your playing fully in the video and the instrument is fully visible - please film full length where possible.
Tutors are drawn from across the UK’s conservatoires, orchestras and educational institutions.
The Advanced Orchestra will work with conductor Natalia Luis-Bassa.
Successful applicants to these weekend workshops will be required to prepare thoroughly in advance. Nicky and the team will guide you through some of this preparation process via the ‘With Nicky’ video series on YouTube. Before applying, please ensure you have the support of your instrumental teacher to assist you with the preparation stages of the workshops. If this is not possible, don’t worry, we will be here to help!
All participants will be expected to be able to play their parts before the start of the course, and we strongly recommend learning your parts from memory. This will allow us to better focus our time together on larger objectives like story telling, sound production, expression, and flexibility and diversity in music.
The Benedetti Sessions will be open to all young musicians and teachers, whatever their background or circumstances, and it is possible to have all of your fees paid for you. We offer financial assistance through bursaries so no one should be prevented from attending a workshop weekend due to financial hardship. Each case is assessed individually and all applications are treated in the strictest confidence. Please indicate on the application form if you will require financial assistance.
The cost for the Benedetti Sessions 2020 is:
